Medical Marijuana for Fibromyalgia Treatment
More patients and physicians are considering the effectiveness of medical marijuana for fibromyalgia treatment.
Severe Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), is one of the conditions that is approved by the state of Illinois for patients to undergo treatment with medical marijuana. The disease is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and multiple tender points in the neck, spine, shoulders and hips. Patients experience deep tissue pain, digestive and bowel dysfunction, fatigue, headaches, depression, insomnia, anxiety, concentration and memory problems, muscle stiffness, and numbness and tingling in the hands, arm, legs, and feet.
Researchers are not yet certain what causes this pain, but believe it comes from from overactive nerves in the central nervous system, which can cause a more intense response to pain. It’s almost as if the volume control for pain is turned way up.
Survey: medical marijuana for fibromyalgia treatment may be more effective than traditional prescriptions
In a survey conducted by the National Pain Foundation, 1,300 patients with the chronic pain disorder were asked to rate the effectiveness of treatments that they’ve tried. 62% of patients who tried medical marijuana found it to be “very effective” compared to only 8-10% of patients that found the drugs Cymbalta and Lyrica most commonly prescribed for fibromyalgia, to be effective.
Which strains are best?
One of the many strains we carry at PDI Medical that treats fibromyalgia symptoms is Canna-Tsu. It is a Sativa dominant strain that has a 2:1 ratio of CBD and THC and is very effective for the treatment of many conditions including Severe Fibromyalgia. The medical attributes that Canna-Tsu provides relief from are widespread pain, stress, headaches, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and inflammation.
Research shows CBD to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties without psychoactive effects (the “high” or “stoned” feeling”) that THC provides, so Canna-Tsu, as well as many other forms of cannabis we have at PDI, can be an effective treatment in calming the overactive nervous systems of fibromyalgia patients.
