Patient Story: Cheryl Reinwald
Cheryl Reinwald: Nurse is Beating Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer with Cannabis Oil.Cheryl Reinwald has been a nurse for 30 years. She’s worked in nearly every healthcare capacity including emergency rooms, surgery centers, and integrative medicine. Cheryl is also a wife, mom, grandma, yogi, and fitness enthusiast. When she noticed something unusual on her skin last year, Cheryl’s instincts told her it was serious. Cheryl had basal cell carcinoma in the past, but this time was different.
Her instincts were correct—she was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma.Cheryl’s time working in integrative medicine trained her to treat the whole patient, instead of the symptoms. Integrative medicine employs a holistic approach that considers improving the patient’s entire physical condition in addition to targeting the specific symptom. Cheryl followed this approach to fight her skin cancer.
Working closely with her integrative medicine doctor, Toni Bark, they put together a health plan to fight the carcinoma. Dr. Bark designed a special diet to reduce inflammation, and even invited Cheryl to her home for cooking classes. Bark also suggested using medical cannabis to treat Cheryl.Knowing it would take awhile to get Cheryl’s medical cannabis card, Bark immediately prescribed a CBD regimen in November of 2017. The Squamous Cell Carcinoma had already shown signs of improvement in the 4 months it took for the medical cannabis card to arrive.
Cheryl excitedly began using medical cannabis in March of 2018 and has seen significant improvements since then. Cheryl makes her own salve using concentrates from PDI Medical, a dispensary Cheryl feels has more medical expertise than other places. She found other dispensaries often suggested items without reasonable medical explanations.Cheryl chose PDI Medical after a consultation with Joseph Friedman, a PDI Medical Pharmacist. Friedman patiently took the time to listen and come up with treatments that were in line with Cheryl’s medical beliefs.Cheryl now works closely with Joseph as well as PDI Medical product specialist, Elle, to find products that work for her. “It’s worth the long drive to PDI Medical,” Cheryl explains, “I know that they have the expertise and experience to help me. I wish more doctors would be open to cannabis in their medical treatment. As a nurse, I’ve encountered so many doctors stuck on traditional dogma such as pharmaceuticals or surgery.”Cheryl cautions that you can’t rely on cannabis alone and strongly encourages patients to reduce their intake of sugar and processed foods. Cheryl is thrilled with the progress she is seeing and is confident that she is doing what is best for her and her family.NOTE: Cannabis has shown potential for helping treat certain types of cancer and alleviating some of cancer’s symptoms. However, much more research needs to be done into the medical benefits of cannabis. Accordingly, before choosing cannabis or any other type of treatment, PDI Medical strongly urges you to speak with your doctor for advice. PDI Medical’s licensed pharmacists and other healthcare professionals can work with your other medical care providers to make sure that you are getting the best and most complete medical care possible.
