3 Ways to Apply for an Illinois Medical Marijuana Card
A few days ago, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced that only 4,600 people out of nearly 30,000 had submitted a “completed” application to receive an Illinois Medical Marijuana Card.
Why are so many applications incomplete?
It could be that people are applying who don’t have one of the qualifying conditions. It might also be that the application process can be a frustrating experience for those with serious illnesses.
There are three ways to apply for your medical marijuana card, but there’s one step you need to take first.
Before you begin the application process,
talk to your doctor about medical cannabis treatment and have your doctor complete a Physician Written Certification Form.
You can’t receive an Illinois Medical Marijuana Card without approval from your physician. Legally, you must have a “bona fide” relationship with your doctor. That means you can’t just see a new doctor once or twice to get approval for treatment with medical cannabis.
While some physicians are supportive of the use of medical cannabis to treat specific conditions, others are more skeptical. If your physician does not want to complete the Physician Certification Form, you can begin seeing another doctor who may help you, or you can have your doctor contact one of the pharmacists at PDI to ask questions.
Once you have your physician’s approval, there are three ways to apply.
- Apply online. Patients and caregivers can apply for an Illinois Medical Marijuana Card online via the Illinois eLicense System. You will need to submit passport photos and fingerprinting online, and your physician will need to send in his or her certification form separately.
- Apply via mail. You can print out the application forms, fill them out, and mail them in. You will need to supply a state-certified set of fingerprints, along with passport photos. Application forms can be found here.
- Apply in person at PDI Medical in Buffalo Grove. Our doors open this month, and we have a comfortable public area to walk you through the application process, no matter where you are in the process. We have state-certified fingerprinting services and passport photo services, both for a nominal fee.
No matter where you are in the application process, PDI Medical is here to help you with questions or to provide the documents you need like fingerprints or photos. We can help you apply online or via mail, and we can talk to your physician if he or she has questions about medical cannabis treatment.
